Why We Care

We are living through a pivotal time in human history. We have progressed from the stone age to the space age and have created wonders and abundance beyond the imaginations of the generations before, yet people are struggling to afford their basic needs such as housing and food.

At Haven Homes we understand there is plenty to go around, however the behaviours and incentives generated by the systems we have in place are unacceptable and counterproductive to our mental health, personal wellbeing and the very survival of humanity. 

We understand the struggles and have heard the horror stories of many landlords. We understand why many land lords do not wish to deal with renting out their homes. We see the foundation for these issues stem from the tenancy act, which gives the renters too much control and limits landlords ability to protect and manage their investments.

On the other hand we understand many renters feel stuck and hopeless. They feel strange improving homes or even taking good care of them due to an underlying fear of landlords evicting them, to rent out the properties at a higher rate.

We understand our current systems of managing these relationships generate negative incentives on both sides, leading to more issues and less owners putting their homes on the market. We understand this through a systems designs perspective and that the problems we face are byproducts of the systems we employ.

What is needed to correct the problem is an alternative system. This means rewriting legal agreements and fundamentally redefining expectations for both owners and renters. The pay off for this restructuring will be extremely powerful and effective at producing positive behaviours for all parties.

Here are Haven Homes we feel it is a necessity to correct the direction we are heading so people can live more affordably, with a greater sense of security, stability and hope for the future.

We understand the housing crisis from a systems level, at a fundamental level and have innovative social solutions that can be implemented with minimal effort and resource expenditures. It would be irresponsible for us to ignore the issues when we can influence the future and better the lives of countless individuals.
